AI took our jobs

Since the modern wave of AI started in 2022, there’s been talk of professions having their jobs taken by AI. It’s becoming a reality that AI is taking jobs (especially in Software Development). However, it’s not the way that has been predicted.

The Elephant in the Data Centre

The tagline of “AI” has been indelibly scrawled into to the Buzz Word Bingo chart. Companies are investing more money in AI and not seeing much return on investment. They need to cut costs somehow and show customers that they are getting returns on investments. Or at least not making huge losses. It’s hard to get solid evidence of this, but just looking at forum posts and apart from the obvious big players creating models (Anthropic, Google, OpenAI) I don’t see anyone dominating AI products. There are smaller companies doing some cool things and there is an innovative range of Agentic systems. There needs to be another jump in technological ability to make the current state of “AI” more like the AI that is useful and smarter and sustainable. The current state of AI isn’t really AI anyway, but that’s another conversation.
